Manavari Temple: After defeating, Lord Rama was riding the pushpa Vimana to return to India. When the Vimana was crossing Munishwaram, it started vibrating. At this moment, the lord realised that the Brahmaasti Dosham (the curse of killing Ravana, who was a Brahmin) was not following him at this point. Seeking guidance, he started to pray to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva answered his prayers by advising him to install and pray to four Shiva lingams at specific locations. These locations are Manavari (Sri Lanka), Thiru Koneshwaram (Sri Lanka), Thiru Ketheshwaram (Sri Lanka), and Rameshwaram (India). The first of the lingams was installed at Manavari. Since the lingam was installed by Lord Rama himself, it’s called the Ramalinga Shivan.
Muneshwaram Temple: The Muneshwaram Temple is believed to be older than the tale of Ramayana. Believed to be the oldest temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, it already had a Shiva lingam when Lord Rama visited it. Its very name, Munishwaram, is derived from Munnu (meaning “first”) and Easwaran (meaning “Lord Shiva”). After killing Ravana, the curse of killing a Brahmin (Ravana) followed him. It is at this place that Rama came to pray, asking Lord Shiva for guidance to lift the curse.
Thirukethiswaram Sivan Temple: Thirukethiswaram Sivan Temple is an ancient Hindu temple at Manthota, just seven miles from Mannar. As per local mythology, this is the same place where Kethu Bhagawan worshipped Lord Shiva. Dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva for centuries, this is a holy site for Hindus all over the world. Just beside this temple is the Palavi Tank. This tank is reversed in the hymns of Saivite saints such as Sundarar and Thirugnana Sambandhar.
Shankari Devi Shakthi Peetam: The Shankari Devi Shakthi Peetam is a small temple holding heavy significance for Hindus of Sri Lanka and India. According to local myths, the original temple was built by King Ravana and was the first among the Aashtadasha Shakti Peeths as recorded by Adi Shankaracharya.
Sita Amman Temple: The Sita Amman Temple is one of the most architecturally rich temples in Sri Lanka. On one side of this temple, there are statues of Rama and Sita. Today, this ancient temple is a modern building with paintings, statues, and sculptures inspired by the Ramayana. Near this place is the Ashok Vatika. This is the garden where Ravana kept the depressed Sita. He tried to manipulate her into marrying him, but Sita, loyal to Rama, refused every time. It is also the place where Sita met Hanuman. Hanuman brought Rama’s ring and informed her that Rama was looking for her. He also offered to carry Sita on his back. However, Sita refused as she felt that would dishonour her husband.
Ella: Ella is a charming hill station that houses some of the most important landmarks in the Ramayana. The Ravana Ella Waterfalls are a breathtaking sight. Besides this, on the way to Yala from Ella, you can visit the Katharagama Temple. This temple houses both the Buddhist deity Kataragama deviyo and the Hindu deity Lord Murugan.
